Our Story…

In 2012, after the Kumbabhishekam of Kundrathu Kumaran Temple at Dean side, we noticed a simple need – devotees would visit the temple after work, take part in the poojas, and by the time they returned home, it would be 8 or 9 pm. Cooking a meal that late at their home was a challenge.

The solution was born from compassion – a humble temple canteen serving fresh, wholesome, and affordable vegetarian food so devotees could come for darshan, pray, enjoy a comforting meal, and return home stress-free.

From the very beginning, our purpose has been to serve pure and tasty food at less cost. We offered the lowest prices in Melbourne, and even today, we continue to keep our food as affordable as possible without compromising on taste or Quality. Every dish is prepared with care, purity, and respect for traditional values, by our experienced and dedicated cooks. Our kitchen is 100% vegetarian, catering to the many devotees and families who visit, as well as to people from diverse cultural backgrounds – from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Burma, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, Africa, and beyond. We embrace this diversity by offering a wide variety of dishes from different regions, including specialties from North, South, East, and West of India, ensuring there is something to delight every palate.

What began as a small act of care has now blossomed into “Kumaran Vilas Veg Restaurant” – a warm and welcoming space where food, culture, and community come together. Our loyal customers and their appreciation over the years have allowed us to grow and serve not just devotees of the temple, but also the wider community of Melbourne.

Today, Kumaran Vilas is proud to be known for pure, authentic, and lovingly prepared Indian vegetarian cuisine at prices that remain accessible to all. Whether you’re seeking a quick bite after prayer or a relaxed dining experience with friends and family, we welcome you to our restaurant – and be part of our story.
